Ocular infection and inflammation are of high interest to the scientific community because vision is widely regarded as our most valued sense. Fear of blindness remains one of the most profound human concerns, making vision preservation a key clinical and scientific priority. The eye itself is a uniquely complex organ, which makes it an exceptional model for studying tissue biology and host-pathogen interactions. Conditions such as uveitis illustrate how finely balanced and easily disrupted ocular immune regulation can be. Emerging research on the gut-eye axis further highlights the importance of systemic and local microbial communities in maintaining ocular health. Because the eye is vulnerable to numerous inflammatory and infectious diseases that can impair vision, and because this vulnerability increases with age, understanding the mechanisms driving these disorders is increasingly important as populations age globally. The substantial economic burden that ocular diseases place on patients and society underscores the urgency of continued research and innovation in this field.
