Lipid Mediators: From Bench to Clinical Approaches

Conference Summary
This interdisciplinary field has evolved dramatically over the past two decades, with a broader and deeper understanding of the relevance of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), ceramides, lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and SPM to physiology and disease. 

It is now at a pivotal translational moment: LPA signaling has recently been positioned as a "versatile and targetable axis in translational medicine," with 2025 publications highlighting its multimodal and multinodal architecture that enables diverse therapeutic interventions across oncology, fibrosis, and neurological disorders. Moreover, there has been accelerated development of pharmacological agents that have moved rapidly into clinical trials for autoimmunity, endothelial dysfunction (most recently in COVID-19), pulmonary fibrosis, cancer and other diseases. Novel small molecule inhibitors (receptor antagonists, enzyme inhibitors) are in development by numerous pharmaceutical companies for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cancer and other diseases, with several in various stages of clinical trials. 

This conference will facilitate scientific exchange among researchers studying diverse aspects of lysophospholipid, ceramides, and pro-resolving mediators (SPM) biology, with the goal of creating creative and impactful collaborations, enabling translation of current research into improvements in human health, from a diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive point of view, and bringing new and underrepresented researchers into the field.

Attendees will learn about:

  • New therapeutic frontiers for S1P receptor modulators
  • LPA receptor modulator advancements for fibrotic diseases.
  • Nano formulations of ceramides supporting cancer treatments

Program topics include:

  • The role of specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPM) in immune resolution after infections
  • Potentials for S1P receptors in acute neurological indications
  • Translating basic findings in the field into clinical practice

Workshops:  

A Meet the Experts session will offer trainees the chance to engage directly with leading research scientists from varying career paths.

A moderated Career Development Workshop will  discuss the use of social media within research, including how can it be used at a platform for publications, network, collaborations and how research foundations, universities or industry evaluate this information. Is it a tool for promotion? Will it increase your chance for funding?
