Conference Summary
Autoimmunity is a fascinating and also fast-developing research area in immunology, due to the increasing rate of autoimmune disease diagnoses.
Delineating the pathogenic mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets involved in these different diseases requires the combined expertise of investigators working in the fields of immunogenetics, microbiology, basic mechanisms of immune tolerance, immune regulation, and tissue damage at the organ level, alongside translational scientists who treat patients. Developing therapies -- biologics and small molecules -- requires extensive knowledge of the immunological pathways involved in different autoimmune diseases. Notably, one of the major complications of cancer immunotherapy with checkpoint inhibitors is the development of a wide range of autoimmune complications ranging from colitis to diabetes. An increased emphasis on developing research areas as well as on therapeutics will stimulate strong interactions and cross-fertilization.
Attendees will learn about:
- Rapidly evolving fields, including immunoregulation, immunometabolism, spatial immunology and novel therapeutic approaches
- B and T cells in autoimmunity
- The influences of innate immune regulation on autoimmunity
Program topics include:
- The role of tissue-specific factors in driving end-organ damage
- Advances in technological and bioinformatic approaches for the characterization and treatment of autoimmune diseases
- Ways to establish and maintain connections to translational scientists and biomedical industry professionals who are working to translate mechanisms into therapeutic targets.
Workshops:
Multiple Meet the Experts lunch sessions will offer attendees the chance to engage directly with speakers from varied career pathways to provide networking and mentoring.
The Career Development Workshop will feature panelists from varying career paths and stages after lunch on the first day, allowing trainees to network with the panelists during the meeting.
