New Factsheets Highlight Regional Impact of Biomedical Research Funding
By: Abigail RandolphThursday, March 26, 2026
In a new factsheet series, FASEB highlights the regional impact of National Cancer Institute (NCI) funding for NCI-designated Cancer Centers. While NCI funding is allocated to specific institutions, its impact extends beyond institutional, city, county, and state lines. These factsheets demonstrate the broad geographic reach of biomedical research funding, underscoring the importance of sustained federal investment in biomedical research.
For each of five regions (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West), these factsheets provide a breakdown of the areas within NCI-designated Cancer Center catchment areas, including the number of counties, number of congressional districts, and the percentage of the population within at least one catchment area. They also highlight the proportion of metro, nonmetro, and medically underserved counties.
These factsheets are available for use as a resource for policymakers to better understand the widespread impact of federally funded biomedical research and the continued need for broad support.
