FASEB Updates Policy Statement on Use of Animals in Research and Education
By: Galen CobbThursday, December 18, 2025
In light of shifting federal policy priorities and renewed scrutiny of animal research, FASEB has released an updated Statement on Principles for the Use of Animals in Research and Education. The revised statement reaffirms the essential and ongoing role of non-human animals in advancing biomedical discovery, while recognizing that computational and in vitro approaches complement – but often cannot yet replace – whole-animal research. It also modernizes the framework by explicitly encouraging validated alternatives when appropriate, expanding coverage to cephalopods, and emphasizing transparency, rigor, and reproducibility. Together, these updates underscore FASEB’s commitment to ethical, evidence-based science at a time of evolving political and regulatory headwinds.
