FASEB Submits Comments on NIH-Wide FY 2027–2031 Strategic Plan
By: Galen CobbFriday, May 15, 2026
On May 8, FASEB transmitted comments in response to the Request for Information (RFI) on the NIH-wide Strategic Plan for fiscal years (FY) 2027-2031. The RFI solicited feedback on a proposed Framework for the strategic plan, articulating three priority areas – Research Areas, Research Capacity, and Research Operations – and relevant goals for each.
In its comments, FASEB expressed broad agreement with the proposed framework while raising concerns across all three priority areas. Key themes included preserving the balance between basic and translational research funding, protecting shared research infrastructure and support for early career researchers, and restoring transparency in NIH policymaking through structured public engagement. FASEB encouraged NIH to apply evidence-based decision-making – prioritizing scientific merit – to decisions affecting the allocation of research funding and the evolution of research methodology, particularly as the agency navigates significant shifts in policy and priorities.
