FASEB Submits Comments to NIH on Measuring and Rewarding Scientific Impact

Tuesday, August 18, 2026
FASEB submitted comments in response to the Request for Information (NOT-OD-26-087) on Measuring and Rewarding Scientific Impact, issued by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In its comments, FASEB emphasized that expert peer review remains the cornerstone of evaluating scientific quality and should not be replaced by metrics-based assessment. The federation recommended that NIH partner with scientific societies to identify meaningful indicators of rigor and reproducibility, integrate transparency requirements for generative AI into existing reporting structures rather than creating new systems, and recognize replication studies as valuable scientific contributions. FASEB also urged NIH to ensure that any new assessment approaches account for differences across career stages, disciplines, and institution types, and that investments in reproducibility are matched by investments in the infrastructure needed to support it.
