FASEB Names Keiran Smalley, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of FASEB Cancer

Thursday, October 15, 2026

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) announced today, Keiran Smalley, PhD, of Moffitt Cancer Center, as the founding Editor-in-Chief of FASEB Cancer, a new journal dedicated to advancing high-quality, multidisciplinary cancer research. The journal will officially open for submissions on October 19, 2026.

Under Smalley’s leadership, FASEB Cancer will establish a new home for the broad and evolving cancer research community, connecting discoveries across disciplines and supporting research that advances our understanding, prevention, and treatment of cancer. The journal will place particular emphasis on multidisciplinary basic and translational science, while creating space for emerging areas of research that are reshaping the field.

“I believe there is a need for a high-quality, well-respected cancer journal that is run by working scientists, that has a commitment to fair and transparent peer review,” Smalley said. “My editorial ethos is one of fairness, rigor, and a commitment to impactful, high-quality science.”

An Experienced Cancer Researcher and Scientific Leader

Smalley is a cancer researcher and scientific leader at Moffitt Cancer Center, where he leads the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Center of Excellence. In this role, he works to advance collaborative team science that brings together basic scientists, population scientists, and clinicians.

His multidisciplinary research experience spans basic cancer biology, therapeutic development, and translational research, and he collaborates extensively with researchers nationally and internationally. Smalley also holds leadership roles with cancer foundations and funding organizations and works closely with patient advocates.

Smalley brings extensive editorial experience to FASEB Cancer. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Clinical Cancer Research, Melanoma Research, Cancer Biology & Therapy, and Drugs. Since 2015, he has served as Associate Editor for Pharmacological Research, overseeing oncology manuscripts. He has also served as a reviewing editor for eLife and has contributed editorial leadership to special issues focused on melanoma research.

“Dr. Smalley stood out for his scientific breadth, extensive editorial experience, and clear vision for building FASEB Cancer into a trusted and respected home for the cancer research community,” said Loren E. Wold, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal and FASEB BioAdvances. “We are excited to welcome him to FASEB Publications and I look forward to working alongside him as he builds a journal that serves researchers, advances rigorous science, and responds to the evolving needs of the field.”

Building a Journal for the Future of Cancer Research

FASEB Cancer will prioritize multidisciplinary basic and translational cancer research, including mechanistic clinical studies supported by robust correlative science.

The journal will also seek to create a home for rapidly developing and historically underserved areas of cancer research, including:

  • Aritificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in cancer research
  • Cancer metabolism and mechanistic nutrition
  • The micrbiome and cancer
  • Cancer neuroscience
  • Aging and cancer
  • Cardio-oncology and nephron-oncology
  • Rare cancers
  • Emerging cancer models and methodologies

The journal will welcome researchers from around the world across career stages, with a particular commitment to engaging early-career scientists and introducing the next generation of researchers to society-led scientific publishing.

Smalley also envisions an editorial team that reflects the global cancer research community, bringing together scientists from diverse geographic regions, scientific disciplines, backgrounds, and career stages.

“Being selected as Editor-in-Chief of FASEB Cancer is an enormous honor and an incredible opportunity to build a new, highly respected publishing venue for cutting-edge cancer research,” added Smalley. “I believe I have the energy, experience, and vision to make the journal highly successful and a leading publication in the Cancer/Oncology field.”

A Society-Led Home for Cancer Resarch

As a FASEB journal, FASEB Cancer will be rooted in the scientific community it serves. The journal will complement FASEB’s existing publications while creating a dedicated destination for cancer-focused research and facilitating collaboration across the broader society-publishing ecosystem.

The journal will also work closely with The FASEB Journal and other society publications to create thoughtful pathways for manuscripts whose research may be better suited to another journal, helping authors identify an appropriate home for their work without unnecessary barriers or duplication.

Beyond original research, FASEB Cancer plans to develop authoritative reviews, editorial content, and focused collections addressing emerging areas of cancer science.

Submissions Open October 19

FASEB Cancer will officially open for manuscript submission on October 19, 2026.

Researchers working across basic, translational, and mechanistic cancer science are encouraged to begin preparing their research for submission and consider FASEB Cancer as a new home for their work.

Founding Editorial Board

FASEB is also building the journal’s founding Editorial Board and seeking scientists interested in helping shape the journal during this important stage of its development. Researchers from a range of disciplines, geographic regions, backgrounds, and career stages are encouraged to express their interest here.
