How Gametogenic Genes Promote Cancer

This conference will focus on reproductive/germline genes that are abnormally expressed in cancer (also known as cancer testes antigens). These are proteins typically only required for reproduction and are expressed exclusively in testes, ovaries, and placenta. However, tumors frequently induce expression of these proteins for unknown reasons. Recent studies now indicate that these abnormally expressed proteins are important for tumor progression and their inhibition reduces tumor survival. Thus, these proteins represent ideal therapeutic entry points for treating cancer with limited impacts on normal tissues.
