National Postdoctoral Association Conference Features FASEB Presentations

The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is hosting its annual conference this year virtually on April 15 -16. FASEB is coordinating three panel sessions and presenting one poster on a variety of topics pertaining to career development. Conference registration is open through April 11.

On Thursday, April 15 at 1:40 pm ET, join the “Policy Career Paths for Post Docs and the Things I Wish I Knew” panel session to hear about various career opportunities from individuals with first-hand experience working in industry, government, biotech, and non-profit organizations. Featured panelists are Tyrone Spady, PhD, from National Institutes of Health (NIH); Laurel Kuxhaus, PhD, from National Science Foundation; and Karthik Ramachandran, PhD, from Likarda. Chris Smith, PhD, NPA Board member, will moderate.

During the first concurrent session on Friday, April 16 at 12:15 pm ET, hear from career development experts during “Mentors and Sponsors: A Successful Career Needs Both.” Discover the difference between mentors and sponsors, and how to cultivate these distinct relationships outside of your research advisor. Moderated by Robin Lorenz, MD, PhD, FASEB Board member, this panel features B. Bea Rajsombath from Salk Institute; Naledi Saul from University of California, San Francisco; and Sharon Milgram, PhD, from NIH.

Finish your conference experience during the final concurrent session on Friday, April 16 at 4:10 pm ET with FASEB’s “Professional Societies: Meeting the Diverse Needs of Today’s Postdocs” panel. Learn about the plethora of professional development support opportunities offered to you from scientific societies. Panelists are Shawn Boynes from American Association for Anatomy; Kirsten Block, PhD, from American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; and Brooke Bruthers from American Physiological Society. Yvette Seger, PhD, from FASEB will moderate this session.

Finally, Jacqueline Robinson-Hamm, PhD, from FASEB will present a poster on soft money in salary support during the poster session at 4 pm ET on Thursday, April 15. This is an opportunity to learn about salary support in academic jobs to help aid in your future career decisions.
