FASEB Comments on Joint FDA-NIH Workshop on Reducing Animal Testing
Wednesday, July 16, 2025On July 14, FASEB submitted comments in response to a policy announced during a Workshop on Reducing Animal Testing held jointly by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH). The workshop, held on July 7, featured presentations on the recently announced initiatives that outline both agencies’ commitment to prioritizing Novel Approach Methods (NAMs) and reducing reliance on the use of animal models in their respective research portfolios. In her presentation, Nicole Kleinstreuer, PhD, Director of the NIH Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI), announced a new policy that all new NIH funding opportunities moving forward should incorporate language on consideration of NAMs. FASEB’s comments reiterated recommendations made in a letter to NIH Director Jayanta “Jay” Bhattacharya, PhD, and approved by the Board in June.
