FASEB Comments on CSR Fellowship Review Working Group Update

On May 4, FASEB transmitted comments to the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review (CSR) Advisory Council praising the efforts of the Fellowship Review Working Group. An update shared by the Working Group in late March highlighted proposed new review criteria for individual fellowship applications that aim to de-emphasize the reputation of the sponsor and institution, making it possible for highly qualified applicants with less traditional academic backgrounds to score well. FASEB applauds many Working Group suggestions, including eliminating grades from the application and the institutional environment section as an individual scored criterion. We also offer considerations for continuing to develop and clarify newly proposed review criteria and emphasize that training for reviewers will be necessary. FASEB looks forward to the next Working Group update on this crucial project.
