Mario Navarro
Peer Mentor since 2009

Mario Navarro is in his fourth year as a Ph.D. student in the Joint Doctoral Program of San Diego State University and the University of California San Diego. As a student in the Chemistry Department at both institutions, he is carrying research in the laboratory of Dr. John Love where the focus is protein design and protein stability. His work entails the design and biophysical characterization of ubiquitin fusions to ascertain the catalytic properties of the enzyme human carboxy hydrolase L3 (UCH-L3). After graduating with a Master’s degree in marine biotechnology, he decided to further more explore his knowledge in protein biochemistry by pursuing a Ph.D. degree. Throughout his development he has served as a teaching assistant (TA) at both institutions, has mentored undergraduates from underrepresented minorities in sciences, and has facilitated workshops as part of the MARC program.

Breaking the Ice - Mario's "Q&A"

What sound would you use for beauty?  Why?

A baby smiling, because it represents the innocence of a life that just begins.

What one-liner would ou put on your gravestone?

 "Smile, you could be here!"

What do people like best about you? Why?

I am very open.  Being open allows for direct communication.

What quality do you need in order to succeed?  Why?

Perseverance, because you simply need to have the mindset of perseverance to succeed.

What makes you most secure?  Why?

When I know that I am right.  It allows me to argue with confidence.

Choose a word to describe a sunset.

A beautiful chance to start all over.

Choose a word to describe the elderly population.

What will you be doing ten years from now?

I don't know, but I hope I will enjoy it!

What is your favorite part of the day?

Dinner, because it brings people together to talk in a more relaxed way.

 Coffee or Tea?

Coffee in the morning; tea in the afternoon.
