Kamilah Grant, PhD

Kamilah E. Grant

Kamilah Grant
Peer Mentor since 2009

Dr. Kamilah Grant is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Tuskegee University School of Veterinary in the department of pathobiology. Her current research focuses on conducting microbiology, molecular biology and immunology focused studies related to aquatic health to develop multiple detection methods for the identification of commensal flora-derived pathogens in water and Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) through biochemical testing and molecular responses of fish to modulated experimental diets.

Dr. Grant obtained her PhD in Agricultural Life Sciences and Genetics from Mississippi State University in 2013.  She completed both her BS and MS degrees in Animal and Poultry sciences at the prestigious Tuskegee University (TU). Upon returning to her alma mater Dr. Grant has cultivated her passion for mentorship and diversification of biological sciences by serving as co-director of Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Math (STEAM) directed summer programs for high school and community college students as well as served as mentor to undergraduates participating in the TU Integrative Biosciences Research Experience for Undergraduates (IBS-REU) summer program.

Dr. Grant has remained active with the student focused developmental programs that nurtured her into the researcher she is today. She looks forward to continuing to work the FASEB-MARC program and facilitating the personal and professional development of young scientists in the same spirit in which she mentored.

Breaking the Ice - Kamilah's "Q&A"

If they made a movie of your life, what would it be about and which actor would you want to play you?

If a movie were made about my life it would be a docudrama and comedy.  You can't make this stuff up.  I would best be portrayed by the actor, Rosie Perez.

Tell us about a unique or quirky habit of yours.

I am obsessed with cleaning my counter tops and vacuuming.  I think it stems from being in the lab and the fear of literally bringing my work home with me.  That plus I hate bugs.

If you were an ice cream flavor, which one would you be and why?

Chocolate chip mint. It's smooth, and there is just a little bit of chocolate to add fund and surprise to the mix.

If you could play any instrument, what would it be and why?

I played the trumpet and French horn from elementary school and half of my undergraduate years.  My father wanted me to play the flute because I was petite.  I refused.  The trumpet was MUCH cooler.

When trick-or-treating as a kid, was there any kind of candy that you didn't like to get?

Yes. Mounds.  I hate candy with coconut.

When you were in grade school, what did you want to be when you grew up?  And why?

I wanted to be a veterinarian because I loved animals.  I had just gotten a puppy and when I went to her first veterinary visit I was fascinated and fell in love with the profession that day.

What article of clothing/attire most closely describes your personality.

 Stilettos, of course.

If you had a "theme song" that played whenever you walk into a a room full of people, what would it be?

Shining Star by Earth, Wind and Fire.

What is the first thing you think of when you wake in the morning?

Today will be more productive and positive than yesterday.

If you had a band what would you name it?

  Smooth Science and Stilettos.
