Coalition Activities
Coalition activities include those in which
the independent Federation Member Societies wish to act as one, bringing
together the influence of over 84,000 bio-science professionals. FASEB
coordinates these activities and brings specific expertise to bear on Society
priorities, enabling the successful completion of objectives, or the
continuation of ongoing programs vital to the life science community.
Public Affairs
http://www.faseb.org/opa/
A hallmark coalition activity, and one for which
FASEB is cited as a successful example among scientific disciplines, is the work
of the Office of Public Affairs (OPA). OPA activities advance the interests of
individual investigators in the biomedical sciences and are guided by FASEB
Society Members who serve on the Public Affairs Executive Committee. FASEB is
recognized as the principal voice of the biomedical research community on issues
related to research funding and research integrity. Public Affairs remains
FASEB’s primary focus. Major activities include—
- Government Liaison - identifying issues and
communicating FASEB positions to decision makers
- Policy Development - convening consensus
conferences and providing support for FASEB committees
- Research - collecting and analyzing data for
use in development and advocacy of FASEB and Society positions
- Communication - publishing the FASEB
Newsletter, maintaining a public affairs home page on the World Wide
Web, and establishing an e-mail network for the rapid dissemination of
urgent policy information
- Coalition Building - working with other
groups to create a coalition to ensure that the broad views of working
scientists are considered
- Public Outreach - developing publications to
inform the public and elected officals about the benefits of biomedical
research.
The FASEB Journal
http://www.fasebj.org
The FASEB Journal, an essential
element of the educational program of the Federation, is the official
publication of the Federation.
- FJ is peer-reviewed by an
international editorial board comprised of scientists widely recognized in
their respective fields, and led by Editor-in-Chief Dr. Vincent T. Marchesi,
Director of the Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at Yale University.
- FJ publishes state-of-the-art reviews,
and original multi- and interdisciplinary research communications each
month.
- FJ Online includes FJ Express,
a revolutionary publishing format for rapid publication of up-to-the-minute
science.
- FJ has a very high citation impact
factor and is ranked first in the biology category of the JCR.
FASEB Summer Research Conferences
http://www.faseb.org/meetings
Since the early 1980’s, the FASEB Summer
Research Conferences have served more than 24,000 scientists from throughout the
world in the field of experimental biology. The goal of these conferences is
communication among leaders in each field to expand research and find solutions
to crucial biomedical problems. These conferences are organized as follows—
- experimental biologists meet in small groups
to explore new approaches to current research areas of intense scientific
development
- topics are selected by a scientific advisory
committee and avoid duplication of other conferences
- emphasis is on cutting edge research, with
prominent scientists who are heavily engaged in similiar activities
communicating among themselves
- attendees are selected by the chairpersons on
the basis of their probable contributions to science.
FASEB Directory of Members
http://mercury.faseb.org/fasebdir
The FASEB Directory of Members contains 48,978 separate
life scientist listings, an essential reference for the life science community.
The Directory contains—
-
name, degree, title, institutional affiliation, address,
Society affiliation and date of joining, telephone and fax numbers, and
e-mail address
-
a geographical listing of all members by state, city, and
in some cases, institution
-
the constitutions, bylaws, current officers and committees
of the Federation and Member Societies
-
a listing of all members of Congress with state and
Washington phone numbers, and phone numbers of key congressional committees
with jurisdiction over diverse scientific disciplines
-
phone numbers of NIH offices and initial review groups
-
Buyers’ Product and Service Guide
-
nearly two-thirds of the listings include email addresses.
MARC
https://career.faseb.org/marc/index.html
The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC)
program was created by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)
to increase the number of biomedical scientists from minority groups. A key
objective of the MARC program is the encouragement of minority students in the
pursuit of graduate training leading to the Ph.D. degree in the biomedical
sciences.
