John A. Smith, MD, PhD

John A. Smith, M.D., Ph.D. is currently Past President for Science Policy of FASEB.  He is Professor of Pathology and Director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine at University of Alabama at Birmingham. He received his medical degree from University of Missouri-School of Medicine, his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Melbourne, and his M.M.M. degree from Tulane University.  He is board-certified in Clinical Pathology.  His research interests include protein and peptide chemistry, molecular immunology, and bioinformatics.  He serves on the editorial boards of Current Protocols in Molecular Biology, Proteins: Structure, Function & Bioinformatics, and Peptide Science.  He is the author and co-author of 168 publications and editor of 6 books.  He formerly served on the editorial boards of Analytical Chemistry, Journal of Peptide Research, Journal of Peptide Science, and Journal of Molecular Recognition. He is the recipient of a D.Sc. (honoris causa) from Purdue University, The Distinguished Young Physician Award from the University of Missouri Medical Alumni Organization, and a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Science at Purdue University.  He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American College of Physician Executives.

Dr. Smith previously served as Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and Associate Molecular Biologist & Pathologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital.  He was later an Executive Director of Autoimmune Diseases Research and Molecular Immunology at Merck & Co.  He is a member of several FASEB member organizations: American Association of Immunologists, American Society for Investigative Pathology, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Protein Society, American Peptide Society, Biophysical Society, and the International Society for Computational Biology.  His previous service to FASEB includes membership on the Board of Directors (representing the American Peptide Society), Public Affairs Executive Council, Public Affairs Committee, Capital Campaign Committee, as well as Enhanced Public Access, Corporate Relations, and Clinical Research Subcommittees of the Science Policy Committee.
