John M. DeSesso, Ph.D. holds a baccalaureate degree in chemistry from Hamilton College and a doctorate in anatomy and teratology from the Medical College of Virginia. He is a Senior Fellow at Mitretek Systems, a not-for-profit science and engineering firm that works in the public interest, where he has worked for 25 years. Dr. DeSesso is a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences, a board certified forensic examiner in the areas of toxicology, anatomy, and risk assessment, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Medicine, and is board certified in homeland security.
Dr. DeSesso is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science/Chicago Medical School, the Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University, and the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center. He has published over 260 papers, chapters, and reports and has given presentations at over 150 conferences and symposia on topics relating to embryology, teratology, toxicology, and human health effects of environmental agents. He is a member of 15 scientific societies, has been elected President of both the Teratology Society (1994-1995) and MARTA (2001-2002), and served as an executive board member of FASEB (1999-2004). During his tenure on the FASEB Board, he was a member of the Public Affairs Executive Committee (1999-2004) and served as Chair of both the EPA Science Budget Funding Committee (2001) and the NASA Science Budget Committee (2002-3).
In addition, he was a member of the Committee on Corporate Relations (2003-4) and the ad hoc Committee to Evaluate Agencies for the Federal Funding Conference (2004). He has provided public commentary regarding scientific issues and funding of research before Federal agencies, State legislatures and Congressional committees. He has been a member of numerous expert panels and, for both regulatory agencies and professional societies, has organized and taught many continuing education courses that deal with embryonic development, toxicology, and risk assessment.
Dr. DeSesso interacts with the community as a frequent guest teacher at elementary and middle schools and as an expert to explain toxicity and risk assessment issues at public meetings. |
