Mark Boothby, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor in the Departments of Microbiology & Immunology as well as Medicine (Rheumatology) at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
After receiving a B.S. degree (Molecular Biology) at the University of Wisconsin (Madison; 1976), Dr. Boothby obtained joint M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in the Medical Scientist Training Program of Washington University (St. Louis) School of Medicine (1983). He received post-graduate clinical training in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship program (1986-1990) combining research in molecular immunology and transcriptional regulation (Harvard School of Public Health & Harvard Medical School) with clinical rheumatology training (Brigham & Women’s Hospital). After starting his faculty career as an Assistant Professor at Harvard, he moved to Vanderbilt University to join a newly added Immunology component of a Department of Microbiology.
In addition to teaching and part-time clinical practice in rheumatology, Boothby has led an active research program investigating the regulation of lymphocyte survival and function by signaling and transcription mechanisms. He has been a Hilda Duggan Arthritis Investigator, Baxter Foundation Scholar in Immunology, Leukemia Society of America Scholar, and a Senior Investigator of the Sandler Family Foundation for Asthma Research. He was a member of the Arthritis Foundation Molecular Immunology study section, and participates actively in peer review functions of the NIH CSR through service on the ALY / CMI-A and IMB / CMI-B Study Sections as well as Special Emphasis Panels, is a regular member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Career Development Program review group, and reviews for numerous journals of FASEB member societies (including the J. Immunol and J. Biol. Chem, J. Clin Invest.) along with others (Immunity, J. Exp. Med., Genes & Devel., Mol. Cell. Biol., PNAS, and New Engl. J. Med.) In addition to long-standing membership in the AAAS and AAI, he is in a second term as a member of the Finance Committee of the AAI.
