Network Meeting

Undergraduate Research In the
Molecular Sciences

Friday and Saturday, October 26 & 27 2007

with support from ND INBRE and MnSCU
Hosted by Minnesota State University Moorhead and Concordia College

CALL FOR POSTERS - Anyone interested in participatin is invited to submit an abstract for their poster or for an oral presentation. We welcome any life science, chemistry or science edcation posters.

Those who wish to present their work as research in process are also encouraged to attend. Students in all areas of biology or chemistry are welcome to participate.

The 2007 Northwest Regional UAN Meeting is going to be a fun and informal chance for students and faculty to connect, network form new relationships and present their work.

Biochemist and Molecular Biologist participants are encouraged to present their work at the 2008 Annual ASBMB Meeting in
San Diego, April 5 - 9.
 
Chemists should consider participating in the 235th National ACS Meeting in New Orleans,  April 6 - 10


- Meeting Highlights -

Registration Includes: Friday Dinner, Saturday breakfast and lunch, meeting padfolio,  ASBMB, JBC and ACS collectors Pins.

Travel Awards:  The top three biochemistry and molecular biology posters and one talk will be presented with a $400 travel award to support attending the ASBMB at the Experimental Biology Meeting in San Diego. The Red River ACS will be awarding two $400 Travel awards for the top oral or best poster presentations so the students can present their work at the National ACS meeting in New Orleans.

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities will assist MnSCU schools to travel to this Meeting!  Email provost@mnstate.edu for information.

Speakers: The meeting will have talks from Forensic Chemist, Holly Long, Mn Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Forensic Science Laboratory "The World of Forensics: From the Field to the Lab".

The meeting will also highlight Carrers in industry with talks from and industrial leader and a speaker from Kelly Scientific.

Small Meeting Format:  A small and inexpensive format allows you the flexibility to meet old friends and culture new relationships.  Learn about what happens at other schools and potential future plans!

Poster Format:  Posters are to be on a single piece of posterboard (no specific size requirement).  All posters must be able to be hung on a one inch wide cork strip.  Posterboard / tagboards will not be available at the meeting.

Oral Presentation Format:  Talks are to be 12 min long with three min for questions.  Each room will be equiped for laptop, MacIntosh or PC presentations.  If nessessary, computers will be provided.  Each speaker must bring their talk on a flash drive and or burned to a CD. Email

Friday' Research Presentation: "The World of Forensics: From the Field to the Lab"


  Holly Long - Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Forensic Science Service Laboratory
Holly is a Forensic Scientist in the Drug Chemistry section at the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and is also a member of the BCA Crime scene team. Mrs. Long spends the majority of her time in the laboratory analyzing items of evidence for the presence of controlled substances. There, Mrs. Long works many hours in the courtroom testifying to her findings. She also gets the opportunity to work in the field. Mrs. Long is trained in the documentation, identification, and collection of evidence at crime scenes. At the meeting, Mrs Long will be presenting on the different areas of forensic science, educational requirements needed for a career in this field and some specifics on the area of drug chemistry and crime scene response.
