"Success comes from having a community."
- Dr. J. Ellis Bell, Chair of the ASBMB Education and Professional Development Committee

How to Start a Chapter of the UAN:

All UAN chapters must be sponsored by a regular member of the ASBMB in good standing. This faculty advisor will be the primary contact for the chapter's activities.  The sponsoring faculty advisor will identify 10 student members and submit annually, a completed UAN Membership Form and UAN Membership Fee of $200.  (See UAN Membership Form below.)
Additional student members can be added for an additional fee of $20 per student.  The membership fees can come from the individual students or the host institution/university.  Please print additional UAN Membership Forms as needed.

Individual Student Members Interested in the UAN:

If an individual ASBMB student member at an institution that does not have a faculty advisor or a UAN chapter, wishes to be part of a UAN, please contact the ASBMB at uan@asbmb.org. The ASBMB will have the appropriate UAN regional director contact the student to assist them in working with the closest active chapter or help the student start their own chapter.

Multiple UAN Chapters at a Single Institution:

Universities with distinctly different departments wishing to have more than one UAN chapter at an institution must submit a request for approval by the ASBMB and the UAN committee prior to submitting applications and membership fees.  Please submit such requests to uan@asbmb.org.

Goals of the UAN:

The EPD has identified four goals of the UAN. They are:

  • To assist in the development of strong undergraduate programs in biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • To provide undergraduate programs with access to seminar speakers and regional programs and symposia.
  • To foster interactions between undergraduate educational and outreach programs both regionally and nationally.
  • To recognize outstanding educational activities in the arena of biochemistry and molecular biology by individuals and by programs.

Benefits of Joining the UAN:

  • Students become official ASBMB members
  • Enzymatic Newsletter
  • Free, online subscriptions to the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC) and Molecular & Cellular Proteomics (MCP).
  • Free subscription to ASBMB Today - our award-winning, monthly news magazine.
  • Reduced subscription rates on other ASBMB publications (Research and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education).
  • Discounted registration fees for ASBMB Annual Meeting.
  • Free online access to Sciences's Next Wave.
