Banking

United States: Banking hours are generally Monday to Friday, 9:00AM – 5:00PM. A few banks are open on Saturdays as well. You can withdraw money from ATM bank machines using your credit card and make purchases in stores and restaurants. Signs will display which credit cards are accepted or you can ask the retailer. Check with your local financial institution to verify if you are able to use your home bank card or credit card prior to travel.

Italy: Banking hours are usually Monday to Friday from 8:30AM - 1:30PM and from 3:00PM - 4:00PM and all are closed all day on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. Most establishments accept credit cards. Logos will be posted in front windows of which cards are accepted. Check with your credit card company to see if they charge an international transaction fee or foreign transaction fee. ATM banking machines in Italy are known as Bancomat, and can be found anywhere in large cities as well as in small towns.

Bahamas:  Banking hours are Monday - Thursday 9:30AM - 3:00PM and Friday 9:30AM - 5:00PM.  They are closed Saturday and Sunday, but ATM's are open 24/7.

 

Currency

United States: The official currency is US Dollars ($). Banknotes come in six denominations: $100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1.

Italy: The official currency is the Euros(€). Banknotes come in seven denominations: 5€, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500.

Bahamas:  The official currency is the dollar Bahamian.  Bank notes come in six denominations: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100.  NOTE:  USD is accepted as a legal form of tender in the Bahamas.

Dialing Codes

United States: The International access code is 1.

Italy: The International access code is 39.

Bahamas: The International access code is 011.

Electricity

United States: Voltage in the United States is 120 volts (60 Hz). Outlet sockets use either a Type A plug which is a class II ungrounded plug with two flat parallel prongs, or a Type B plug which is a class I plug with two flat parallel prongs and a grounding pin.   

Italy: Voltage in Italy is 220 volts (50 Hz). Generally, the only type of outlet found in Italy, will have two round pins. If your electrical devices do not accept 220 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter.

Bahamas: Voltage in the Bahamas is 120 volts (60 Hz).  They use the same outlets as the United States.

Language

The official language of the FASEB Science Research Conferences is English. Translation service will not be provided.

Name Badges

Name badges should be worn at all times during scientific and poster sessions, and meals.

Tipping

United States: Gratuities are generally not included in restaurant prices, taxis fares, etc. It is customary to give a tip of 15-20%.

Italy: A service charge is normally added to the bill in Italy so the amount you see on your bill includes a gratuity. The best rule is to leave a few Euros on the table if the service was good. 10% is considered a very generous tip for especially attentive service.

BahamasMost restaurants automatically add a 15% service charge to the final bill.  It is customary to leave an additional tip if the service was exemplary.
