FASEB Comments on Proposed NSF Reporting Requirements Regarding Harassment

May 04, 2018

On May 2, FASEB submitted written comments to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in response to a request for information seeking input on proposed updates to grant award terms and conditions. The proposed provision would require awardee organizations to report findings and/or determinations of harassment or assault involving NSF funded Principal Investigators (PIs) or Co-PIs.

In its comments, FASEB noted that the proposed updates would provide a clear incentive for institutional compliance and transparency in the handling of harassment and assault reports. Additionally, FASEB recommended clearer articulation of the processes that would lead to the substitution or removal of a PI/co-PI or suspension, reduction, or termination of the award. Lastly, the comments reiterated the importance of uniform resources, such as policies and procedures, promising approaches, and frequently asked questions to help achieve the overarching goal of providing safe and welcoming environments within which to pursue research activities.
