Charles N. Serhan, PhD

Dr. Serhan is the Simon Gelman Professor of Anaesthesia (Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology) at Harvard Medical School, Professor of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity at HSDM, and the Director of the Center for Experimental Therapeutics and Reperfusion Injury at Brigham and Women’s Hospital since 1995. Serhan received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Stony Brook University; followed by a doctorate in experimental pathology and medical sciences from New York University School of Medicine. He was a visiting scientist at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, and post-doctoral fellow with Professor Bengt Samuelsson.

In 1987, he joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School and in 1996 he received an honorary degree from Harvard University. He has received many awards including an NIH MERIT award (2000) and has delivered more than 50 keynote and plenary lectures.  Among these, he received in 2008 the William Harvey Outstanding Scientist Medal and was elected to the rank of AAAS fellow in 2010. Professor Serhan is author of 505 publications, 5 books, and over 463 US patents. His research currently focuses on mapping resolution mechanisms with structural elucidation of chemical signals in the resolution phase of acute inflammation and tissue injury. He also designed resolvin-mimetics for use as agonists in resolution pharmacology as new treatment approaches to disease.

This light-hearted quiz aims to test a researchers' awareness and understanding of research impact, and compare themselves with other researchers – in terms of their knowledge about how research impact is built, and the effectiveness of their current efforts to increase the reach and impact of their work.
