FASEB Responds to NIH Request on Strategies to Improve Impact and Sustainability of Research

May 15, 2015

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) responded to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Request for Information on “Optimizing Funding Policies and Other Strategies to Improve the Impact and Sustainability of Biomedical Research.” In comments submitted electronically and in a letter to the Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, FASEB made a number of recommendations, including suggesting that NIH:

  • Increase portfolio evaluation and explore new mechanisms and funding strategies

  • Prioritize investigator-initiated research

  • Promote more efficient workforce utilization

  • Continue efforts to reduce regulatory burden

  • Support the development of new metrics to assess research enterprise stability/sustainability

These recommendations are derived from Sustaining Discovery in Biological and Medical Sciences: A Framework for Discussion, which FASEB developed over a two-year period in consultation with its 27 constituent societies, subject matter experts, and other research organizations.
