In  May 2013, Michou Kelley received her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the <st1:placetype w:st="on">University of <st1:placename w:st="on">Texas San Antonio/University of <st1:placename w:st="on">Texas <st1:placename w:st="on">Health <st1:placename w:st="on">Science <st1:placetype w:st="on">Center at <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San Antonio (UTSA/UTHSCSA) Joint Graduate Program.  She is older than the average graduate student having worked in industry where she was the director of manufacturing for a leading video and 3D graphics technology engineering company.  She raised three children before returning to school to obtain her B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 2006. Her current research involves the development of improved targeted drug delivery and controlled drug release using novel LbL nanoencapsulation technology.  While an undergraduate, Ms. Kelley was instrumental in the founding of two UTSA-registered student organizations: National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and Society of Undergraduate Research (SURe).  She enjoys serving as a youth choir director and spending quality time with five grandchildren.  She sees mentoring as an opportunity to encourage, inspire and aid students  in pursuing their dreams.

During the month of May 2013, at the time Michou received her PhD, several articles were published about her amazing eduational accomplishments as a non-traditional student who would never give up on her dream to be an engineer, no matter what obstables were placed in her way. Links to some of the articles are listed below:

Breaking the Ice - Michou's "Q&A"

What's your favorite song to karaoke to?

What was your favorite TV show when you were growing up?

Wild, Wild West.  I was really young but I knew what day and time it came on and made sure I didn't miss it.  It drove my family crazy.

What CD is in your CD player right now?

My son, Bernard, is a deejay - Tha Dark Knight - and I have one of his mixes in the car's CD player.

Name the most famous person you've had a face-to-face encounter with.

I had the pleasure of meeting Stevie Wonder.  I was about 15 years old and volunteered to do the March of Dimes at Central Park, New York.

What was your nickname growing up or now?

My nickname is Michou, pronounced "me"-"shoe", which is a Haitian nickname for Michelle.

What is your favorite weird food combination?

When eating a salad, I like to combine Thousand Island and Italian salad dressings. Yum!!

If you were to be on a reality TV show, which one would you be on and why?

I would like to be on Dance Your A** Off.  I love to dance. I took ballet as a youngster.  I want to lose weight, so it would be "killing two birds with one stone."  Of course, I think I would win... duh!

If you could only wear one color for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I love the color purple.  It became my color of choice after seeing the movie [The Color Purple].

What's your favorite line from any movie?

"Harpo! Who dis woman?" [Asked by the character, Squeak, in the movie, The Color Purple.]

How many handbags do you own?

I have, to my husband's dismay, too many!  They have to match the shoes ... "tha shoes!"
