The purpose of the MARC Program is to achieve greater participation in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise of this country by individuals from minority groups identified as being underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences/National Institutes of Health. Our participant selection takes into consideration whether an individual’s participation would help achieve the overall goals and objectives of the MARC Program.
You must meet all eligibility requirements as stated on the applications to be considered for a FASEB MARC Travel Award.
Your application must be complete and must be accompanied by all required supporting documentation.
Student Status is reviewed.
You must submit the application no later than 5:00 PM (ET) on the application deadline date.
When funding is limited due to the high volume of application submittals, the FASEB MARC Program Committee takes into consideration whether or not the applicant has been funded by the FASEB MARC Program for prior meetings supported by the FASEB MARC Program.
When funding is limited due to the high volume of application applications, the FASEB MARC Program Committee reviews the number of applications per institution that were submitted and may limit those institutions to 4 awardees per institution.
For Poster/Oral Presenter awards, you must be the first author, your abstract must have been accepted by the sponsoring society's program committee, and you must present your research at the meeting.
A MARC Student is a student who is participating and receiving funding throughout the year from her/his educational institution's MARC Program.
You may accept both awards; however, your travel award from the FASEB MARC Program will be reduced by the amount of the award you accept from the sponsoring society.
No, you may not rent a car. The FASEB MARC Program is funded through a grant from The National Institute of General Medical Sciences and the National Institutes of Health. The grant stipulates that we may not allow rental car expenses to be reimbursed. If you wish to do so, it will be at your own expense.
To receive funding for attendance to any of our National Scientific Meetings, a faculty/mentor must nominate 1-2 students (maximum) to bring to the meeting in which they are applying for. Faculty/Mentors may not attend on their own.
No, you may not apply to the FASEB MARC Program for funding to any of our programs.
This number depends on the volume of requests, as well as our yearly budget. First priority will always go to anyone presenting "a poster" or giving an oral presentation. In the event of a large number of applications are received for a particular meeting, we will limit Poster/Oral Presenter awards to four (4) per institution. Faculty/Student applications will only be considered if additional funds are available, and we will only fund a maximum of two (2) students and one (1) mentor per application. There will be NO exceptions.
You may fax travel award applications to our office with all required supporting documentation; however, you will need to mail (email or USPS) the originals as well.
According to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and The National Institutes of Health, qualified minority groups that are groups that have been identified as being underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. The groups include: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans and Natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands (Hawai'i and Guam.)
No. The FASEB MARC Poster/Oral Presenter Travel Awards are contingent upon acceptance of your abstract for presentation at the meeting by the program committe of the sponsoring society/societies. In addition, you must be the first author of the poster and actually present at the meeting to be eligible for reimbursement.
The only way a student can receive a FASEB MARC Travel award and attend a meeting without a mentor is if the student is applying for and receives a Poster/Oral Presenter Travel Award and presenting her/his research at the meeting.
It is not the practice of the FASEB MARC Program to advance ANY travel award funds.
No, we do not pay any stipends or indirect costs.
In order for you to be eligible to apply for a FASEB MARC Travel Award, you must reside in the U.S. at the time of application submittal. In addition, you must be a U.S. Citizen or Non-Citizen National of the U.S. or must have been lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence and have a permanent visa at time of application submittal. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible for MARC funding.
