QR codes —are they still used?

It has become almost second nature to add a small QR code to promotional print item. But, have you stopped to consider whether or not your target audience is scanning the QR code?

Research conducted by Pitney Bowes shows that “for QR codes printed in magazines, two out of five Americans 18 to 24 years old report to have scanned one.” QR codes were first used by marketers as a quick, cost effective tool to get consumers to the company website. Now that consumers are inundated with codes, keep these tactics in mind to ensure that your target audience has a great experience with your QR codes.

• Make sure your QR code has a call-to-action. A clear and concise statement engages your target audience and lets them know what content to expect.

• Link the QR code to a mobile optimized website.

• Try to avoid busy QR codes. The longer the link used to generate the QR codes, the grainier QR code will look. Also longer links can be difficult for phones to read. You can shorten long links by using URL shortening sites such as Bitly or Google.

• Be creative! Don’t be afraid to try new and inventive ways to display your QR codes. For example, Surgical Neurology International started adding QR codes to their printed PDF articles. The QR code on the PDF directly links to a corresponding website with an option to download the article to the phone with additional links and videos.
