Resources for Undergraduate Students
 
ASPET Teresa and Anthony Zannoni Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships – Given to institutions to fund summer research experiences in a pharmacology laboratory for undergraduate students. A very limited number of individual fellowships are given to students to work with an ASPET member who may not be at an institution with an institutional fellowship. ASPET Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow Travel Award – Provides support for registration, travel, and subsistence costs for undergraduate students (minority and otherwise) who were supported by a SURF Fellowship the previous summer to attend the Experimental Biology meeting. ASIP 2010 Summer Research Opportunity Program in Pathology (SROPP) – Provides summer research opportunities in pathology for underrepresented minority students by providing financial support for students to visit, learn, and participate in new research in the mechanisms of disease at prominent research laboratories and institutions during the summer.
 
ASN Minority Student Travel Awards – Provide minority undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs with funding to attend the ASN scientific sessions and annual meeting at Experimental Biology each year.
 
SDB-FASEB/MARC Award – Provides winners of SDB’s best poster competition at the ABRCMS (American Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students) annual meeting with funding to attend the SDB annual meeting.
 
ABRF Student/Postdoc Poster Awards – Awards for full conference registration waivers for up to ten students or postdocs who present posters at the ABRF 2010 meeting. The poster will highlight research that was made possible through collaboration with a core facility, and the student or postdoc is to be the presenting author of the poster. 
 
ABRF Satellite Workshop Education Awards – Awards for technical scientists working in core facility laboratories as well as students and postdoctoral fellows interested in pursuing a career in biotechnology. This award covers the registration fee, and a portion of travel expenses, to one of five pre-meeting satellite workshops offered at the ABRF 2010 conference.
 
ABRF–FASEB Faculty/Student Travel Award – Each award provides funding for one faculty member/mentor and up to two students or post-baccalaureates from a minority institution to participate in the ABRF 2010 conference. The faculty/mentor must nominate up to two students and/or post-baccalaureates who are pursuing research careers in a life sciences discipline.
 
ABRF–FASEB Poster/Oral Presenter Travel Award – Each award provides funding for one underrepresented minority graduate/ undergraduate student, post-baccalaureate or postdoctoral fellow who is 1st author and has been selected to give a poster presentation at the ABRF 2010 conference.
 
ASBMR-FASEB Minority Student Travel Award – Provides travel grants to minority students at the undergraduate through postdoctoral fellow levels to attend the ASBMR annual meeting or other eligible FASEB member society meetings. Two types of grants are available: Poster/Oral Presenters Grant and Faculty/Student Grant. 
 
SSR-FASEB MARC Travel Award – Provides funding for travel awards to support the participation of minority faculty/mentors and students, and poster/platform (oral) presenters at the SSR annual meeting.
 
SSR-Burroughs Wellcome Travel Fellowships – Provide travel fellowships for underrepresented minority trainees and junior faculty to attend the SSR annual meeting.
 
TES Minority Access Program – Offers undergraduate students from underrepresented minority groups research internships, seminars/workshops, mentoring, and travel to attend the society’s annual meeting for 2 consecutive summers.

ACSM-FASEB Travel Awards – Provide funding for travel to the ACSM annual meeting for students, postdocs, and faculty/student pairs submitting meeting abstracts or delivering poster or slide presentations.
 
Resources for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Researchers
 
APS Porter Physiology Development Award – Encourages diversity by providing 1-2 year full-time graduate fellowships in programs leading to the Ph.D. (or D.Sc.) in the physiological sciences to underrepresented ethnic minority applicants.
 
APS/NIDDK Minority Travel Fellowship Awards – Provides travel fellowships for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral minority students to present research, build connections to researchers through mentoring, and interact with minority role models at the annual spring meeting, Experimental Biology (EB), and the APS fall conferences.  
 
APS K-12 Minority Outreach Fellowship – Fosters communication between minority graduate and postdoctoral students and middle/high school minority life sciences students and teachers by providing fellowships to visit K-12 classrooms, help conduct teacher and professional development workshops, and attend scientific meetings.
 
ASBMB Graduate Minority Travel Awards – Provides partial support for meeting expenses to minority graduate students presenting an abstract at the ASBMB annual meeting.
 
ASBMB Minority Affairs Articles – These articles are generally focused on health disparities or issues concerning underrepresented minorities in sciences.
 
ASBMB Monthly Minority Scientist Profiles – ASBMB highlights the life and career of a minority scientist each month and asks him/her to give career/professional advice to younger generations of underrepresented minority scientists/students.

Resources for Faculty and K-12 Teachers
 
APS Frontiers in Physiology Program – Provides professional development for middle and high school teachers by providing them with tools and resources and connecting them with researchers on-line and through workshops.
 
APS Physiology Understanding Week - Fosters relationships among teachers, students, and physiologists. PhUn Week encourages member physiologists across the nation to volunteer and work with teachers in their local community to visit a classroom during the first week in November.
 
ASBMB Diversity in Science Award – Established to honor an outstanding scientist who has shown a strong commitment to the encouragement of under-represented minorities to enter the scientific enterprise and/or to the effective mentorship of those within it. The award will consist of a plaque, a cash prize of $3,000, and transportation expenses to present a lecture at the annual ASBMB meeting. The recipient will be chosen by the Minority Affairs Committee.  Nominations must be originated by society members, but the nominee need not be an ASBMB member.

AAI Undergraduate Science Faculty Program in Immunology – To enhance undergraduate science education, enables selected undergraduate faculty members to attend an intensive introductory course in immunology and initiate a hands-on research lab experience for purposes of bolstering undergraduate science curriculum development, fostering research opportunities and ongoing collaborations for scientists at undergraduate institutions, and conveying to undergraduate students the exciting experimental approaches that define the field of immunology.

Research Opportunities
 
APS Undergraduate Summer Research Program – Supports full-time undergraduate students to work in the laboratory of an established physiologist during the summer and to attend the Experimental Biology (EB) meeting. Recruitment includes a focus on reaching minority students who may have an interest in a research career.

Other Resources and Initiatives
 
APS Career Web – Provides career resources for students, postdocs, faculty, and the general public, including information about physiology and physiologists; career paths in physiology; fellowships, awards, and job opportunities; and professional development for established and aspiring physiologists.
 
APS Professional Skills Training – Promotes the development of key professional skills among minority graduate and postdoctoral students in biomedicine through effective live, online, and CD-ROM short courses.
 
ASBMB Minority Affairs Committee – It is the mission of the ASBMB Minority Affairs Committee to increase cultural diversity in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology by increasing participation, visibility, and status of minorities within ASBMB.
 
ASBMB Partnership in Diversity – An online registry that allows scientists who are interested in promoting underrepresented minorities in science to join a network of other individuals with similar interests.  
 
ASPET Committee on Diversity – The charge to the Committee on Diversity is to:
  • Develop strategies to attract minority students into science in general and pharmacology in particular.

  • Work with ASPET membership to address issues of relevance to the recruitment, retention and advancement of minorities in science and pharmacology.

  • Increase the recruitment of minority students into ASPET.

  • Encourage the submission of nominations of outstanding minority members for Society and FASEB awards.

ASN Minority Affairs Committee – This committee offers a chance to get involved and make an impact as a volunteer leader for ASN. The committee enhances the participation of scientists from minority groups in the activities of ASN by sponsoring special events and symposia.
 
AAI Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) – This standing committee is responsible for generating and developing programs that assure equal treatment of all professional immunologists on the basis of merit.
 
AAI MAC Minority Scientist Guest Lecture – AAI’s annual meeting features a guest lecture by an AAI underrepresented minority member.
 
AAI MAC Careers and Networking Roundtable – AAI’s annual meeting event where trainees have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with accomplished, senior minority immunologists and hear how they have handled career challenges.
 
AAI Minority Members List – AAI has developed a voluntary listing of AAI members who are underrepresented minority scientists as defined by the National Institutes of Health.
 
SSR Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) – This committee provides a mechanism for communication between MAC members and SSR members who self-identify as underrepresented; to facilitate access to resources available to underrepresented members of SSR; and to provide a physical resource where issues of concern to underrepresented members of SSR can be raised for discussion.
 
SSR Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) Exhibit Space – The MAC exhibit at the SSR annual meeting includes information regarding training and funding opportunities for minorities, computer with internet service to search for information about funding opportunities, graduate programs, SSR functions, and other information.
 
SSR Minority Affairs Health Disparities Symposium, Forum and Luncheon – This annual symposium is free and open to all interested, registered attendees of the SSR annual meeting, and includes a buffet luncheon for symposium attendees.
 

TES Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) – This committee seeks:

  • To develop programs that increases the recruitment, participation and retention of underrepresented minorities within the field of basic and clinical endocrinology. 

  • To advocate cultural diversity within the society’s membership, programs, committees and leadership. 

  • To increase the awareness within the scientific community and public at large of endocrine disorders that disproportionately affect underrepresented minorities.

TES Annual Meeting Activities – The MAC hosts scientific sessions and networking activities at the society’s annual meeting (ENDO) to enhance the experience of minority students and fellows attending the meeting.
 
TES Outreach at External Exhibits – The MAC participates in conferences and seminars for minority students and fellows to provide information on MAC and society programs, including travel and research fellowship awards and volunteer and networking opportunities.
 
BMES Diversity Award – Honors an individual, project, organization, or institution for outstanding contributions to improving gender and racial diversity in biomedical engineering. The award is given for a broad range of activities, including research, education, and service that improve diversity in biomedical engineering industry and/or academia.
