NIH DIRECTOR EXTOLS THE BENEFITS OF BASIC RESEARCH
Posted on: 08/27/2012

In a Science magazine editorial published on August 3rd, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis Collins pledged that the agency will “continue its strong tradition of supporting basic research.” He cited examples of NIH-funded basic research that led to major advances in the life sciences and pointed out that “today’s basic research is the engine that powers tomorrow’s therapeutic discoveries.” In his conclusion, he urged that the community continue to educate the public on the necessity of a broad portfolio of basic research. FASEB President Judith Bond, PhD wrote to Dr. Collins to express appreciation for his public stand on the crucial role of basic research, a theme that he also addressed in his remarks at the FASEB Capitol Hill Centennial Reception in May.
