FASEB, the American Physiological Society (APS), American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Society for Nutrition, Society for Developmental Biology, the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), and many other professional societies, academic institutions, government agencies, industry, k-12 schools, and science outreach organizations joined forces to hold the USA Science and Engineering Festival during the week of October 18, 2010. The primary purpose of the festival was to invigorate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics among children and parents alike, through a week long variety of events and attractions. To kick off the event, President Obama hosted the first White House Science Fair. Guests included Nobel Laureates, top Administration officials, and winners of some of the nation’s most prestigious student science competitions.

The festival culminated on October 23 – 24 with the inaugural Science and Engineering Expo, to date, the largest event of its kind. Held mainly on the National Mall, the expo boasted more than 1,500 interactive exhibits and educational displays and 75 stage shows with television science personalities, comedians, magicians, and more. Interactive displays ranged from the APS model cardiovascular system and its demonstration of the effects of diet and exercise on heart health to the ASHG phylogenetic sequence identification challenge. In total, an estimated 500,000 visitors participated in the expo.
