SOCIETY SPOTLIGHT: THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR PHARMACOLOGY AND EXPERIMENTAL THERAPEUTICS
Created by on 02/14/2012

The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) is a 4,800 member scientific society founded in 1908. Members of APSET conduct basic and clinical pharmacological research in academia, industry, and government, in addition to engaging in efforts to help develop new medicines and therapeutic agents to fight existing and emerging diseases. ASPET plays a unique role in FASEB’s history as well. In 1912, nine scientists met during the final smoker of the ASPET meeting to discuss founding a federation to increase the efficiency of scientific societies as agencies for the promotion of research. Three delegates from ASPET were present at this meeting, which led to the creation of FASEB.

Today, ASPET members enjoy Society journals and other publications, and frequent educational opportunities through meetings, colloquia and symposia. The ASPET web site serves as a far-reaching source of information for members and facilitates their engagement in social media through Twitter and Facebook. ASPET also contributes to discussions about science policy issues and recently submitted comments in response to the Office of Science and Technology Policy request for information concerning “Public Access to Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Publications Resulting From Federally Funded Research.” In addition, ASPET maintains an active advocacy program, encouraging researchers to visit their members of Congress while they are in the Nation’s Capitol on other business. ASPET makes all congressional meeting arrangements, provides talking points, and prepares members for a day of advocacy. ASPET is also supporting efforts to increase funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through its Advocacy Outreach Program. This effort is designed to develop awareness in graduate students, postdocs, and faculty of the need for enhanced biomedical research advocacy. Presentations provide an overview of the political and economic environment impacting NIH funding and the skills needed by scientist-advocates to influence the debate. ASPET has made presentations at the University of Louisville, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Emory University, Michigan Pharmacology Colloquium at Wayne State, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and the Drexel College of Medicine. To find out more about ASPET’s Advocacy Outreach Program and ASPET’s member Capitol Hill visits, contact Jim Bernstein at jbernstein@aspet.org or 301-634-7062.

Celebrating 100 Years of Advancing the Life Sciences in 2012, FASEB is rededicating its efforts to advance health and well-being by promoting progress and education in biological and biomedical sciences through service to our member societies and collaborative advocacy. Society Spotlight is a new feature that will appear in each issue of the Washington Update to highlight the achievements and public affairs activities of FASEB societies.
