On April 26th, Fred Finkelman, MD, treasurer of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), received the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) William S. Middleton Award. It is the highest honor awarded annually by the VA Office of Research and Development in recognition of outstanding scientific contributions and achievements in biomedical and bio-behavioral research relevant to the healthcare of veterans.
Dr. Finkelman was acknowledged for his pioneering work in basic mechanistic immunology and host-pathogen interactions. The award recognized Dr. Finkelman’s exemplary record of involvement in, and service to, the VA and to the biomedical profession, as well as his seminal contributions to the understanding of innate immunology that led to better knowledge of cytokines in immune-mediated disease, host defense mechanisms in parasitic infection, the role of dendritic cells in antigen presentation, and the mechanism of allergy. His work has had a broad impact on the clinical care of veterans and the population at large.
