FASEB RELEASES NEW BREAKTHROUGHS IN BIOSCIENCE ARTICLE ON DRUGS DERIVED FROM NATURAL PRODUCTS Created by on 08/27/2012
FASEB has released the latest article in the Breakthroughs in Bioscience
series, “Conquering Pain and Infection with Drugs from Nature’s Medicine Cabinet.” Also available as a podcast
, the publication describes the basic research foundations of the development of natural product-derived medicinal compounds that are used in the treatment of pain and infection.
Seventy percent of our drugs for pain and infection are either derived from or inspired by natural products found in rainforests and other ecosystems. These medicinal compounds have dramatically improved quality of life and significantly extended the human lifespan. Through decades of basic research to identify new drugs and unravel the underlying mechanisms of action, researchers are developing newer, more powerful therapies.
The Breakthroughs in Bioscience
series is a collection of illustrated articles that explain recent developments in basic biomedical research and how they are important to society. Other articles include: “Spying on Cancer with PET Scans,” “Life’s Blood: Angiogenesis in Health and Disease,” “Building Electronic Bridges to Bionics: The Basic Science of Neural Prosthetics,” and “Viruses, Cancer, Warts, and All: The HPV Vaccine for Cervical Cancer.” Free copies of all of the articles in the series can be obtained from the Breakthroughs website
