NIH RELEASES PLANS FOR IMPLEMENTING WORKFORCE AND DIVERSITY REPORTS Created by on 12/18/2012
On December 6, 2012, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released implementation plans for its Advisory Committee to the Director Biomedical Workforce Working Group and Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce Working Group reports. FASEB was pleased to learn that NIH will implement many of FASEB’s recommendations. For example, NIH plans to raise postdoctoral stipends, encourage all graduate students and postdocs to create individual development plans, improve the tracking of trainee career outcomes, require training grant reviewers to consider a broader range of career outcomes when evaluating trainee success, take steps to reduce the length of doctoral training, and encourage institutions to improve employment benefits for postdoctoral researchers. Although NIH intends to put some of the recommendations into action as early as 2013, it will be issuing requests for information to solicit additional community input before implementing others.
