The VA Medical and Prosthetic Research program would receive $586 million, an increase of $5 million (0.8 percent) above the FY 2012 level. A summary of the proposed VA Budget notes that investing in medical and prosthetic research supports efforts to advance the care and quality of life for veterans. Research on genomic medicine and the Million Veteran Program (MVP) will be a major goal for VA in 2014. The aim of the MVP program is to establish one of the largest research resources to date, consisting of blood samples from consenting veterans and data from questionnaires and electronic health records. In addition, VA research priorities will address the special healthcare needs of veterans returning from combat overseas.
