FASEB Comments on the Proposed USG Policy for Institutional Oversight of Life Science Dual Use Research of Concern – Bethany Drehman Created by on 05/02/2013
On April 12, FASEB submitted comments on the U.S. Government’s (USG) proposed Policy for Institutional Oversight of Life Science Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC). In its comments, FASEB supported the appropriate oversight for DURC and noted that while the proposed Policy provides great flexibility for institutional implementation, a lack of clear guidelines could lead to institutional “mission creep” and much greater regulatory burden than intended by policymakers.
FASEB recommended that the USG develop case studies to provide greater guidance and delay the implementation of DURC until these resources are made available and institutions have the opportunity to provide feedback. FASEB also encouraged USG departments and agencies to collaborate and develop a single set of cost-effective DURC training materials to make implementation of the Policy much simpler for investigators.
