The FASEB MARC Program provides funding for travel awards to support the participation of Faculty/ Mentors and Students, and Poster/Platform (Oral) Presenters at selected scientific meetings and conferences. The awards help to defray meeting registration and travel-related expenses (lodging, transportation, per diem) for eligible underrepresented minority* undergraduate and graduate students, post-baccalaureates, postdoctorates, junior faculty and mentors/faculty scientists in the biomedical and behavioral science.

Biomedical and behavioral science categories include: biochemistry, bioengineering, biology, cell biology, chemistry, genetics, mathematics, microbiology, neurobiology, physics, physiology and some parts of psychology and sociology.

Full-time faculty members/mentors, undergraduate/graduate students, post-baccalaureates and postdoctoral fellows meeting the citizenship/residency requirements at accredited postsecondary minority institutions are also eligible to apply for the travel awards. (Refer to the Faculty/Students and Poster/Oral Presenter Travel Award applications for the travel award amount.)

Travel awards are processed as reimbursements to the award recipients. An award recipient will be required to pay his/her meeting- and travel-related expenses first, and then request reimbursement from the FASEB MARC Program Office after completion of the meeting/conference.

* Qualified ethnic minority groups that are identified as being underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences include: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Hispanic Americans, American Indians/Native Americans who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment, and Natives of the USA Pacific Islands (Guam, Hawai'i and American Samoa only.)

To receive support from the FASEB MARC Program, all applicants must be USA citizens, or non-citizen nationals (a non-citizen national is a person who, although not a citizen of the United States of America, owes permanent allegiance to the USA.  This is generally a person born in a land that is not a state, but that is under USA sovereignty, jurisdiction, or administration -- for example, American Samoa), or permanent residents.   An individual lawfully admitted for permanent residence must possess an alien registration receipt card (I-551 -- commonly known as a 'green card') prior to applying for funding and participation.  Individuals on temporary or student visas, those seeking asylum, or refugees are not eligible for FASEB MARC Program funding or support.

The purpose of the MARC Program is to achieve greater participation in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise of this country by individuals from underrepresented minority groups as described above.  Therefore, participant selection will take into consideration whether an individual’s participation would help achieve the overall goals and objectives of the MARC Program.
