Jose A. Torres completed a B.S. in biology from Inter American University of Puerto Rico. He also holds a M.S. from Universidad Del Turabo in environmental science. Currently, he is pursuing a doctoral degree in environmental toxicology at Texas Southern University, Houston, TX. He became a member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and Society of Toxicology (SOT) in 2008. He was elected in April 2010 to serve as graduate student representative for the Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists, an SOT specialty group. Mr. Torres’ research interest is in the field of environmental neurotoxicology. He was awarded a competitive NASA Jenkins fellowship to support his pre-doctoral research and career development. Mr. Torres’ future goal is to pursue a postdoctoral research program that focus on in vivo or in silico neurotoxicant models. The NASA Jenkins fellowship has provided him with state-of-the-art supplementary training, such as risk assessment at Harvard, PBPK modeling at Colorado State University, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) at Houston, and project management with NASA staff. NIH-MARC and PR-LSAMP programs sponsored Mr. Torres during his undergraduate years, to engage in biomedical research. Both of these programs were essential in developing research skills and he credits the MARC program was a key factor to completing his undergraduate degree, the first higher education degree achieved in his family. Currently, he volunteers his time as a peer mentor for FASEB MARC at ABRCMS and in the NASA MUST program.
