Sheikh Omar Jobe (Omar) is currently a Predoctoral Graduate Research Student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology Program. Omar is conducting research on the role of estrogen and estrogen metabolites in maternal cardiovascular and other physiologic responses to the endocrinology of pregnancy. He is currently working on understanding and characterizing the vascular mechanisms such as vasodilatation and angiogenesis and their role in pregnancy as well as in gestational vascular diseases such as preelampsia and intrauterine growth restriction. Omar attended Eastern Washington University and received his B.S in Biology and Biochemistry as a Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program Scholar. He is currently writing his dissertation on the “Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology of the CYP450- and COMT-Derived Metabolites of Estradiol-17β in Pregnancy Vascular Adaptations”. For his excellence in academic achievement and research, Omar has received the USDA-NIFA-NRI Merit Award for the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction (2010), the Outstanding Abstract for the 2010 Aspen Perinatal Biology Conference  and has been awarded the FASEB MARC Travel Award (2009 and 2010).

Breaking the Ice - Omar's "Q&A"

 What is the title of the best book you have ever read?  Why? 

 The best book I have ever read is entitled The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.  It chronicles the journey of a shepherd boy through struggles, love, danger, opportunity and disaster.  I love the book because after I read it, I felt like I was reading a story about myself and every other person going through a journey.

 What is the name of the best movie you have ever seen? Why?

 My favorite movie is Shawshank Redemption because it has an unexpected plot and unlikely hero.

 What person has influenced your life the most?  Why?

 My mom has had the most influence in my life.  She always taught me to guard against mediocrity and be the best I can be for the world.  She also taught me the career I choose is my pathway to mastery and excellence.

 What/Who is your favorite cartoon character and why? 

 My favorite cartoon character is Popeye The Sailor Man because I began eating spinach as a kid because of him.

 What's your favorite thing to do in the summer?  

 I started gardening this summer and I absolutely love it! 

 What's the ideal dream job for you?  

  My ideal dream job is being the World Health Organization Executive Director.

 I am definitely a talker!

 What is the most honest thing you have done?  

 Doing my research ethically and honestly.

 If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do? 

 I would fight crime for a day.
