LeeCole Legette, PhD
Peer Mentor since 2011
Faculty Mentor since 2012

Dr. LeeCole Legette has had a variety of mentoring experiences with diverse populations that enables her to serve as a great asset for the FASEB MARC Peer Mentoring Program. During her undergraduate studies, LeeCole mentored high school students (incoming college freshman) in a five-week nanobiotechnology research program at Cornell University.  She also served as a program assistant for a pre-freshman summer program which involved planning and conducting several informative and recreational programs for high school, college, and visiting research scholars.

To enhance her mentoring skills, LeeCole focused on one-on-one mentoring during her graduate studies and became involved in her departmental mentoring programs which matched undergraduate students with graduate mentors based on similar interests. She answered questions about her experiences in research and provided information on various aspects of research positions in academia, industry and government.

Currently, Dr. Legette serves as a committee member and honors thesis mentor for an underrepresented minority student at Oregon State University (OSU) as part of the University Honors College. She provides guidance and direction in research projects for other undergraduate and graduate students in her lab as well.  She is also active with the Black Graduate Student Association at OSU and participates in undergraduate outreach programs such as workshops describing details for success in graduate school. LeeCole hopes to continue to develop and hone her mentoring skills in the FASEB MARC Peer Mentoring Program and looks forward to engaging the students at the ABRCMS conference.

Mentor's Motivational Message

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it. ”  - Maya Angelou
