FASEB MARC Peer and Faculty Mentors Network
Since 1997, the FASEB MARC Program has co-sponsored and supported a half-day minority student program with the AAA (American Association of Anatomists) each year at Experimental Biology meetings. This program provided undergraduate and graduate students with the dynamic and exciting opportunity to meet and confer with world leaders in biological and biomedical research. The scientific atmosphere and venue for this program exerted a positive influence in motivating young people to enter careers in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.
Building on the success of the minorty student program at Experimental Biology meetings, the FASEB MARC Program in association with the American Association of Anatomists (AAA), The American Association of Immunologists (AAI), the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP), and the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), organized and developed the "MARC Student Day at Experimental Biology." Students participating in this program activity had the opportunity to be paired with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who served as peer mentors for the students during the meeting. Students, together with their peer mentors, were able to attend scientific poster sessions and oral presentations; meet and network with world leaders in scientific research and technologies; obtain information about summer research opportunity programs; visit the exhibits; and learn about career paths and opportunities in the Career Resources Center. This activity was extremely beneficial for the undergraduate students since many of the students were first-time meeting attendees. This activity also provided an opportunity for the peer mentors (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) to improve and develop their knowledge and skills in mentoring undergraduate students.
Beginning in 2008, the MARC Student Day concept was incorporated into the ABRCMS 2008 meeting. Through sponsorship by the FASEB MARC Program, many of the graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty members who had participated as a "FASEB MARC Peer Mentor" welcomed the opportunity to serve as peer mentors for the many minority undergraduate students who were first-time attendees at the ABRCMS meeting. The peer mentoring activity at the ABRCMS 2008 meeting proved to be a successful and worthwhile endeavor. The FASEB MARC Program now works in collaboration with the ABRCMS Management Group to help plan and execute the Peer Mentoring Program activities for the ABRCMS meetings.
In 2011, the FASEB MARC Program introduced the FASEB MARC Faculty Mentors Network to provide the more seasoned and experienced peer mentors (who are now junior faculty members) with an opportunity to continue mentoring undergraduate/graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Although they are no longer considered a peer, they are still here and are ready to provide guidance, information and support!
