Yasmeen Solano

Yasmeen Solano is a fourth year PhD student from University of California, Irvine. She is part of the Philip Kiser lab where she is training as a structural biologist. Research in the Kiser lab is centered on various aspects of the visual cycle pathway that regenerates visual chromophore for the photoreceptor opsins. Solano uses an array of techniques, including X-ray crystallography, enzyme kinetics, and biochemical approaches to address important questions about the structure and function of visual cycle proteins. Recently, she presented her work, titled Structural Characterization of the Isomerooxygenase Enzyme, NinaB, at FASEB’s Biology & Chemistry of Vision Research Conference.

As a full-time student, with a one-year-old, FASEB CARES allowed Solano to fully engage in a weeklong programming at the conference without the worry of having childcare financial burden upon her return.

Solano is a member of American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a FASEB member society.
